Outlook on England

This website is devoted to England and English culture with the aim of encouraging
people to look at this great country through fresh eyes.

                                                Chipping Campden high street.

Our English countryside is very special. What compares to an English village when the blossom is on the
trees or a drive to a country pub for Sunday lunch and a glass of wine or a pint of real Ale ?

"A love of tradition has never weakened a nation, indeed it has strengthened them in their hour of peril."
                                                               Sir Winston Churchill.

                                                            England my England.

Goodbye to my England, so long my old friend.
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end.
To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh thats fine.
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.

The French and the Germans may call themselves such.
So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch.
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane.
But don't say your English ever again.

At Broadcasting House the word is taboo.
In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too.
Even schools are affected, staff do as they're told.
They must not teach children about England of old.

Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw.
The pupils don't learn about them anymore.
How about Agincourt, Hastings, Arnhem or Mons?
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.

We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is miles away over the sea.
We're the English from England, lets all be proud.
Stand up and be counted, shout it out loud.

Lets tell our government and Brussels too.
We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue.
Fly the flag of Saint George or the Union Jack.
Let the world know - We want our England back!

                                                       Origin of the name England.

In the 5th century the Britons invited Anglo Saxon tribes to help them in their fight against the Picts from the North. Many came, Angles, Saxons and Jutes which we colletively call the Anglo Saxons.

The leaders of the Anglo Saxons were Hengst and Horsa who led an uprising against Vortigern, King of the Britons.
After several years of conflict the Anglo Saxon's prevailed and the name England derived from the Angles,
Engla-Lond "Land of the Angles."

                                                   Largest ever Anglo-Saxon gold find

The largest ever discovery of Anglo- Saxon gold artefacts has been found in a Staffordshire field
by 55 year old Terry Herbert. An amazing amount, more that 1500 objects were found with his
metal detector.

The Anglo Saxon treasure is thought to be from the 7th century in what was the Kingdom of Mercia.
It was held at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery for awhile before being taken to the British museum
for valuation. This has now taken place and it has been valued at £ 2.8 million pounds.

The money has now been found to keep the hoard in its rightful place, the West Midlands or Mercia if you prefer.
Now a further £1.7 million is needed for restoration, preservation and to investigate further into this fascinating period
of our history. Also a Mercian trail is planned between Birmingham and Stoke which will include Tamworth and Lichfield.
